Thankyou Annabel Crabb for this article, which contains a fantastic description of Bishop frantically hunting down her supposedly secret ballot paper to prove that she didn’t vote for the man she’s now standing behind, and also this:

What’s with this trend for female politicians being referred to as “girls”? Julie Bishop is Tony Abbot’s “loyal girl” and Kristina Keneally is “nobody’s girl”. While both set my teeth on edge, they are professional women, not little girls.

I’m with you Emmeline, although I will note that KK was responding to the assertion that she was ‘Joe’s girl’ and as such can probably be excused for the rhetorical flourish (though not for her other sins) and is essentially rejecting this diminutive.
