Wednesday Murdoch... WTF
Sorry, but the following graphic has just appeared on the Daily Tele’s website, linked to a story about the death penalty about to be meted out to the bali bombers:
“The photo Australia has longed to see”. Um, no.
When I saw this graphic, two images popped into my head. The first was the execution scene from Orwell’s 1984, where Winston and Julia meet in a crowd at an execution, seizing the moment to secretly press their hands together in unbridled lust as the crowd of proles around them rise to a frenzied peak of hatred at a passing parade of Eurasion prisoners. The second was I think a horrible episode of Doctor Who, or it could have been Torchwood, involving a space station where people were abducted and made to perform in reality tv shows involving death for the camera. In each case, death as a spectacle, execution as entertainment.
